Congratulations to Prof. Douglas Hanahan, former director of isrec@epfl, who has been elected Foreign Member of the Royal Society, in recognition of his substantial contributions to the advancement of science.
Election to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is considered a mark of excellence and one of the highest honors in the scientific field. Scientists are elected by current members, in recognition of their exceptional contributions to research.
The ISREC Foundation is proud to be able to count on Prof. Gasser’s and Prof. Sallusto’s extensive scientific expertise.
Founded in 1863 as a result of an Act of Congress that was approved by Abraham Lincoln, the NAS is charged with providing independent, objective advice on matters related to science and technology. The NAS is committed to the advancement of science, and its members actively contribute to the international scientific community. Approximately 500 current and deceased members of this organization have won Nobel prizes. The NAS’s official journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, founded in 1914, publishes original research and is one of the leading international scientific journals.
Congratulations to Prof. Coukos on becoming a member of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Each year, the AACR honors scientists whose contributions have promoted innovations and significant advances in the fight against cancer.
The mission of the AACR, a global association consisting of renowned scientists, is to prevent and cure cancer through research, education, communication, collaboration, science policy and advocacy, as well as by funding cancer research.
Congratulations to Prof. Elisa Oricchio (holder of the ISREC Chair in Translational Oncology from 2014 to 2020) and her research teams at EPFL: in collaboration with Prof. Giovanni Ciriello’s group at the University of Lausanne they were able to elucidate how whole genome doubling can change the way DNA is organized.
Congratulations to Prof. Johanna Joyce on her publication in the prestigious journal Cancer Cell. The article, co-authored with Karin de Visser, is entitled “The evolving tumor microenvironment: From cancer initiation to metastatic outgrowth”.
This study addresses the interactions between cancer cells and their microenvironment throughout disease progression. The ISREC Foundation is proud to support Prof. Johanna Joyce’s promising research.
From April 21st to May 1st 2023, Helder Amaral will participate in the MARATHON DES SABLES, a 7-day, 250-kilometer foot race in the Moroccan Sahara, during which the participants must be self-sufficient.
Mr. Amaral is not running for his personal achievement, but for a good cause: the funds he raises will be generously donated to institutions involved in cancer research, including the ISREC Foundation.
Many thanks to Helder Amaral for this incredible project. We wish him the best of luck

The ISREC Foundation is proud to contribute to the launching of the scientific careers of outstanding women.
Congratulations to Prof. Ping-Chih Ho, who has been appointed full professor at the University of Lausanne. Previously an associate professor, from 2023 onwards he will be responsible for both teaching and research, ensuring the training of the next generation of academics in his area of expertise, “immunometabolism and cancer immunology”.
The ISREC Foundation is pleased to have contributed to the launch of Prof. Ho’s career by funding his chair in immune engineering from 2013 to 2020.
